As part of what became a month-long celebration of my dad’s 90th birthday, we took a ride in the 2015 Cadillac ATS sedan for a lunch at the iconic Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
Probably my favorite place in LA for a delicious lunch, power breakfast, fancy dinner or late night meal (did you know they serve food until 1:30 AM?) the Polo Lounge at the luxurious Beverly Hills Hotel has been the place to go for over 70 years.
The space is awesome, redesigned and fresh yet still retaining its historic polo playing roots. The Polo Lounge was opened literally as a lounge for players to relax after polo matches when Beverly Hills was home to a refined equestrian culture in the 1940s. Rich woods and deep tones and tartan are evident, elegant, yet comfortable. There’s a large inside dining area and a great shaded patio as well.
Lunch was spectacular as always, starting with a delicious bowl of tortilla soup. Made with grilled chicken, queso fresco, green onion and avocado, it’s quite wonderful. Next up was one of the Polo Lounge staples, the McCarthy salad. This favorite is also available at all the Dorchester Collection properties as part of their Taste of Dorchester selections for in-room dining. Prepared table-side, the chopped salad includes romaine, grilled chicken, organic eggs, beets, tomatoes, cheddar cheese, smoked bacon, avocado and a balsamic vinairgrette. It’s tossed and finely chopped. For my main course, I went with the Prime New York steak salad, with a grilled six-ounce filet, charred vegetables, shaved vegetables and an amazing blue cheese vinairgrette.
Dessert was a cupcake plate, decorated with personal birthday wishes. It was a wonderful end to a delicious meal. As always, service was personal, attentive and caring. The staff, some of whom have been with the hotel for decades, are just so great at making guests feel welcome, whether they’re hotel guests or just there for a meal.
