One of the best hotels in England, Coworth Park is the country house hotel from the Dorchester Collection. Located deep in English riding country near Ascot and Windsor Great Park, the resort is a perfect compliment to a luxury London experience at one of Dorchester Collection’s two iconic properties there (The Dorchester and 45 Park Lane).
The Dorchester Collection is the uber-luxury hotel group that includes The Dorchester and 45 Park Lane in London (and the Beverly Hills Hotel, Plaza Athenee, Le Meurice, etc.). They have brought their best-in-the-world amenities, accommodations and service to the English country house hotel experience.
Housed in and around a grand 18th century manor house about an hour from London, Coworth Park is a truly amazing hotel experience. The focus here is on relaxation, with one of Britain’s best spas, fine food, wonderful wine and equestrian pursuits. Coworth Park is the only hotel in the world with its own polo field and there are many riding options, from playing polo to experiencing a first-time ride on a horse.
We stayed in the magnificent Arbuthnot Suite, the property’s largest, named for the family who originally owned the estate. The grand suite, in the center of the mansion house and overlooking the gardens and grounds, had room after room . Although I’ve never visited Buckingham Palace, it felt like visiting a very wealthy friend at their country mansion or palace, not like staying at a hotel. The suite and the entire hotel has a modern, luxurious and a bit funky style and it works so wonderfully.
In the fantastic suite there was a large living room with a real, working wood fireplace. It was a wonderful evening to have it crackling as we enjoyed some wine. Coworth Park even has a fireplace team who come to the suite to prepare and light the fire. The bedroom was enormous, with a stylish four-poster bed. There was a large dressing room and walk-in closet and a truly spa-like bathroom. The highlight of the bathroom was the copper-clad bathtub, placed on its own in front of the windows, with a view of the grounds. There was a large spa shower and the size of the space, also with those high ceilings, was just incredible.
Although we didn’t make it to the amazing spa, housed in its own contemporary building that looks like an art museum, we did go for a horseback ride. The property has a large equestrian center and there’s a range of horse-related activities available.
Food is artisal and features seasonal, locally-sourced products. The Barn is the Coworth Park signature restaurant, popular with not only guests but local mansion-owning residents too. Many diners make the hour drive from London just for a lunch or dinner there. We had a great dinner, driven there through the January cold on a Coworth Park golf cart. The large, open space, built in the property’s former barn, includes a large fireplace and huge open kitchen.
Restaurant Coworth Park is the property’s other restaurant, located in the mansion house and serving three meals a day. The menu is modern yet classic British cuisine and we had a delicious breakfast there. The Bar at Coworth Park has a great cocktail menu and the Drawing Room is also in the mansion house and serves light snacks and afternoon tea.
I flew to London on Norwegian, in their amazing Premium cabin. With astonishingly low fares (under $500 roundtrip from LAX in Economy class, about $1,500 roundtrip in Premium) you also get great service and new 787 aircraft. They have four, direct flights per week from LAX right into Gatwick.
